Murthy was born on July 10, 1977. Murthy’s family migrated to England from Karnataka, India. And in 1980 they moved to Miami, Florida, USA.

Education:

Murthy graduated as valedictorian from Miami Palmetto Senior High School in 1994.He graduated with distinction in 1997 with a Bachelor of Arts in Biochemical Sciences from Harvard University. In 2003, Murthy earned an MD from Yale School of Medicine and an MBA from Yale School of Management. Murthy completed his Internal Medicine residency at Brigham and women’s hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts

Career:

Murthy co-founded VISIONS Worldwide in 1995 when he was pursuing his freshman year in Harvard University, which is an NGO focused on HIV/AIDS both in India and the U.S. In 1997, he co-founded the Swasthya Community Health Partnership to train women as community health workers in rural India. He led and managed medical care teams as a faculty member in Brigham and women’s hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts when he was doing his MD. He is also a founder and president of Doctors of America.

In 2011, Murthy was appointed by U.S. President Barack Obama to serve on the U.S. Presidential Advisory Council on Prevention, Health Promotion, and Integrative and Public Health within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

Murthy is also the co-founder and chairman of Trial Networks.

In November 2013, Murthy was nominated by President Obama for the post of United States Surgeon General.
