Global Indian: Rohan Murty

Birth: Rohan Narayan Murty was born in 1983 in Hubli Karnataka. Rohan is the son of Narayana Murthy, founder of Infosys, and his wife Sudha Murthy, an engineer and author.

Education: Rohan studied at the Bishop Cotton Boys’ School in Bangalore for 12 years, from pre-school to higher secondary school. After completing his 12th standard board exams, he moved to the US and took an undergraduate degree in Computer Science from Cornell University. This was followed by a PhD in computer engineering from Harvard University, which he obtained in 2011. His PhD was supported by a Siebel Scholars Fellowship and a Microsoft Research Fellowship.

His research interests spanned networked systems, embedded computing and distributed computing systems. He aspires to improve digital connectivity in rural India.

Though he is a computer science Ph.D., he is also interested in Philosophy, history and classics.

Career: In 2010 Rohan founded the Murty “Classical Library of India” with an aim to reintroduce the Indian literary work to the new generation. It was made in continuation of the Clay Sanskrit library project headed by Sheldon Pollock. He is associated with Catamaran Ventures, a $127-million venture capital fund headed by N.R.N. Murthy.

Irrespective of his potential and talent Rohan is not a scion of Infosys.

In June 2013, Rohan was appointed as an executive assistant at the Chairman’s Office reporting to Narayana Murthy at Infosys; he was also appointed as Vice President at Infosys. Rohan left the company on 14 June 2014 when his father stepped down as Executive Chairman.

He is currently appointed as junior fellow at the Harvard Society of Fellows, a position granted to a computer scientist after a gap of 50 years.
