BS MD Program in USA

BS/MD program is also known as direct medical program, which allows students to earn a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree followed immediately by a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree without having to go through a separate admissions process for medical school.

The students who focus on a medical degree from USA right from their undergrad, MS is a great option. Obviously, students choosing this program require committing to a career path much earlier than the standard declaration of a college major. It is a complete commitment towards career in medicine and has limited option to explore with career options beyond medicine.  This requires a particularly mature and self-driven attitude to know exactly what you want to do with your life by the time you graduate high school. This program is meant for the high achievers.

Getting into a BS/MD program is extremely difficult and competitive. This program needs very high score in Standardized Test (SAT & SAT subject Biology/ Chemistry) and over all high score (GPA) in high school degree.  The requirements are usually much stricter than those for other undergraduate applicants. Number of seats available for this program is very limited to 10 to 20 seats per year.

Competition for BS/MD programs is very intense. Many students applying will have a GPA of 4.0 or higher, a SAT score of 1550+ or ACT score of 34+, 5’s on science-based AP tests, perfect scores on SAT Subject Tests. May be students who would apply will have add on to their profile like being involved in some medical research, hospital volunteering, physician shadowing and more experience.

Since admission to this program is highly competitive, apart from high academic records a successful applicant will need an exceptional recommendation letter from a science teacher who taught him/her in high school.  It also requires a convincing statement of purpose, student’s future aim and goal, which need to be well-articulated in the essay.

Essay is the only way to interact with the admission officer. It will help to put the profile ahead and stand out among the crowd to justify why the university should consider the profile for such an elite program.

BS/MD programs generally take 8 years to complete, or if a student can accelerate the course may complete it in 7 years and get into residency. Some BS MD programs in a few universities can be completed in 6 years.
